Report: Mughniyeh's Israeli Killers Infiltrated to Syria from 'Kurdistan'

The Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot has said in a report that the assassins of Hizbullah commander Imad Mughniyeh were Israelis who infiltrated from 'Kurdistan' into Syria.
The paper said that operational planning for Mughniyeh's Feb. 2008 assassination started with the arrest of Ali Moussa Daqdouq, a Hizbullah 'foreign operations' official, near Karbala, Iraq, in January the same year.
Iraqi security forces later handed over Daqdouq to U.S. intelligence agents who also questioned him regarding Mughniyeh.
The man has reportedly provided the CIA with many details about Mughniyeh, including his phone numbers.
The Americans, according to Yediot, provided the Israeli Mossad with all the information unveiled by Daqdouq.
The paper said that Mughniyeh was assassinated because he committed one big mistake.
The mistake was that several people knew that he would visit Iran's new ambassador to Damascus, on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the Islamic revolution on Feb. 12.
The paper added that the Israeli assassination team sneaked into Syria from Iraqi-Kurdistan in three vehicles and monitored Mughniyeh's move a day before his assassination, including wiretapping his phone line.
According to Yediot Aharonot, the Israeli team reached Mughniyeh's Mitsubishi Pajero and exchanged the headrest with another loaded with explosives. The Israeli team did not use a time bomb because it feared unforeseen changes.
Once Mughniyeh was seen seated next to the driver's seat, the headrest blew up by remote control, the paper said.
Yediot Aharonot added that Israel fears Hizbullah and its backer Iran would avenge Mughniyeh's killing on the first anniversary of his assassination.

"February 13, 2008 -- Bush's strangest Syrian bedfellow: At center of suspicion in Hezbollah leader's car bombing: The head of Syrian military intelligence, Assef Shawkat, is no stranger to working with the CIA. Syria has, since 9/11, served as a host for the torture of "extraordinarily renditioned" prisoners captured by the CIA. Shawkat has been at the center of the CIA's program.
WMR has learned from reliable sources that the car bombing in Damascus of Hezbollah military commander Imad Mugniyah on February 12 was carried out by Shawkat with the active encouragement and support of Deputy National Security Adviser Elliott Abrams and Israel's Mossad. WMR has reported in the past that Abrams is the coordinator within the Bush White House of political assassinations, particularly those in the Middle East, and specifically, similar car bombing assassinations in Lebanon. WMR has also previously reported that many of the car bombings in Lebanon were the result of coordination between Israeli, American, and Syrian operatives, including "rogue" Syrians and Lebanese agents in the employ of Shawkat.
Mugniyah was wanted by the United States and Israel for a number of terrorist attacks in the 1980s and 1990s, including the 1983 bombings of the US Embassy and Marine Barracks in Beirut, the 1985 hijacking of an Athens-to-Rome TWA flight in which Navy diver Robert Stethem was murdered, and the kidnapping and murder of Beirut CIA station chief William Buckley in 1984 and Marine Corps Lt. Col. William Higgins in 1988.
Significantly, the Israeli Prime Minister's office has denied any role in Mugniyah's assassination. However, Israeli government and intelligence officials are happy that it occurred.
Mugniyah's car exploded at around 10:30 pm in the up-market Tantheem Kafer Souseh neighborhood of Damascus. WMR has learned that the car bombing of Mugniyah was to be timed with the February 9th birthday of President Ronald Reagan, a gesture by Shawkat to the Americans, but the specially designed Mitsubishi seats containing the bombs were installed late, resulting in the February 12 assassination.
In the Middle East, dates, particularly anniversaries, carry much weight. The assassination of Lebanese Member of Parliament Elie Hobeika on January 24th 2002, coincided with the birthday of Elliott Abrams, the then-National Security Council Middle East director. Hobeika's car bombing assassination in Beirut was also carried out by Shawkat's operatives, according to WMR's Middle East sources. The Hobeika assassination was the first in a series carried out by the CIA and Mossad with the assistance of Shawkat's intelligence operatives in Lebanon.
Shawkat, by delivering the goods on the assassination of America's "Most Wanted" Mugniyah, has ensured that he will now receive the protection of the Bush White House in the current UN investigation of car bombings in Lebanon, most notably that of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri."

"The mysterious assassination of a top Syrian army officer and right-hand man to President Bashar al-Assad has triggered intense speculation about a crisis inside the Damascus regime over its complex relations with Iran, Hizbullah and Israel.
According to one report, the seaside murder of Brigadier-General Muhammad Suleiman was perpetrated by a sniper firing from a yacht moored offshore.
Suleiman was described by Syrian officials as dealing with defence and security issues in Assad's private office. Israeli and Syrian opposition sources claimed he worked as "liaison" with the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hizbullah, Israel's sworn enemy.
Suleiman, 49, was killed on a beach near the Syrian resort of Tartous on Friday.......
Assassinations are very rare in Syria and Suleiman's murder was the first since the Hizbullah commander Imad Mughniyeh was killed in February by a car bomb in Damascus, causing huge embarrassment to the regime. Hizbullah accused Israel's Mossad secret service of that assassination but the results of the Syrian investigation have never been disclosed.
Iranian media yesterday quoted "informed sources" as claiming that the sniper was an Israeli. Israel declined to confirm or deny any connection with the killing. But Israeli sources suggested that the ongoing indirect peace talks between Israel and Syria meant this was unlikely to be the case.
Syria's tightly controlled official media did not report on the killing. But Syrian sources confirmed that Suleiman was shot by a silenced weapon in the head and neck on a beach at al-Rimal al-Zahabiyeh resort near Tartous, where, like other privileged Syrians, he owned a chalet. He dealt with "sensitive stuff", said one.
One distinct possibility is that the killing may have been an internal settling of scores. A Syrian with high-level contacts inside the regime linked it to a power struggle between Assad and his military intelligence chief, Assef Shawkat, set off by the Mughniyeh killing.
"After Mughniyeh's assassination the president apparently stripped Shawkat of many of his powers," the source told the Guardian. "Suleiman would have been involved in that process and it was known that Shawkat hated Suleiman." [My (TONY) comment: some well-connected sources had implicated Shawkat in the Mughniyeh assassination, so it makes sense that he would want to eliminate Suleiman, since he knew the real score.]
Suleiman acted as Assad's point of contact with the army and helped oversee a shake-up of the security services in the weeks leading up to his death, several sources said.
Andrew Tabler, a Damascus-based political analyst, tied Suleiman's assassination to strains over Syria's relations with Iran and Damascus's indirect talks with Israel. "The major issue now facing Syria is its relationship with Iran and Hizbullah and how it can reconcile that with talking to Israel," said Tabler. "The assassination means there is a power struggle going on in Syria and it most probably concerns Iran. People like this don't just die unless something is going on."
Israel makes no secret of its wish to "detach" Syria from its odd-man-out alliance with Iran, demanding that it also sever its ties with Hizbullah and the Palestinian Islamists group Hamas, now controlling the Gaza Strip. Assad wants to improve relations with Washington and is pinning his hopes on the next US administration. Syria's ties with Europe improved following a recent official visit to a Paris summit where Assad was feted by the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy.
Since succeeding his father Hafez in 2000, Assad has sought to purge the security services of much of the old guard, replacing them with his own people. But the regime was thrown into turmoil after the February 2005 assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri, which took place when Syria's intelligence services and their Lebanese allies still controlled security in Beirut.
A UN investigation initially accused Syrian and Lebanese intelligence officers of involvement in Hariri's killing. Maher al-Assad and Shawkat were both named in one draft report. In October 2005 Syria's former security chief in Lebanon, Ghazi Kana'an, was found dead in his office, in an apparent suicide that some suggested had been officially encouraged - giving rise to the novel phrase "he was suicided"......"
