Palestinians Mark Prisoners Day across West Bank, Gaza

17/04/2009 Hundreds of Palestinians on Friday took part in "Prisoner Day" rallies in the Gaza Strip, Bethlehem, Ramallah and other Palestinian cities, demanding the release of thousands of their compatriots held in Israeli jails.

The day was marked by marches, calls to action and moments of silence as communities took time to remember and honor Palestinians in Israeli custody.

Hamas officials told ralliers in Gaza that the issue of prisoners was at the top of their list, and reminded members of the Al-Qassam Brigades affiliated with the party, that all efforts were being made to secure their release.

The movement welcomed efforts in support of a prisoner swap and reminded listeners that unity and the creation of a Palestinian state would also be a move towards the end of Palestinians in Israeli cells.

Also from Gaza the An-Nasser Brigades, the military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), echoed promises for renewed efforts to secure the release of Palestinians. “We will use all our means to kidnap more Israeli soldiers and exchange them with Palestinian detainees,” a spokesman said.

In the northern West Bank town of Tubas, residents observed a 15-minute electricity cut as a way of marking off time to remember and express solidarity with the prisoners. The power cut started at 8am and lasted until 8:15am.

Meanwhile, Ziad Abu Ein, the assistant Palestinian minister for detainee affairs, said that a total of 9,260 Palestinians are currently held in the Israeli occupation prisons.

Hamas: suffering of prisoners, blood of martyrs price for liberation

[ 17/04/2009 - 07:21 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- The Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, has asserted Thursday that it would remain faithful to the Palestinian captives in Israeli jails and to the blood of the Palestinian martyrs who died for Palestine and the Aqsa Mosque.

In a statement it issued in commemoration of the Palestinian Prisoner Day and the fifth anniversary for the martyrdom of Dr. Abdul Aziz Al-Rantisi, the late prominent political leader of the Movement, and a copy of which obtained by the PIC, Hamas vowed to remain steadfast on the path of resistance till the entire Palestinian soil is liberated from the occupation.

The Movement also underlined that the issue of the prisoners would remain on top of its political agenda, and that all options are open for Hamas and the rest of the Palestinian resistance factions to free all Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

In this regard, the Movement criticized the international community for turning a deaf ear to the suffering of the Palestinian prisoners and their families for decades now, underlining that the international community should act to lift the oppression on those captives.

The Movement welcomed all efforts towards achieving an "honorable" prisoner-exchange deal with the Israeli occupation, adding that releasing [captured Israeli soldier Gilad] Shalit wont be achieved through committing foolishness in Gaza, but, it added, it could be achieved by accepting the humanitarian conditions of the Palestinian resistance.

Moreover, Hamas warned the Israeli occupation authorities of carrying out any foolishness against the Movement's top leaders, underlining that committing such action would open the door of the struggle wide open.

In the West Bank, the Movement called on the Ramallah-based government of Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas to stop the policy of political detention, and to free all political detainees from the PA jails that would pave the way for the Palestinian national reconciliation.

According to Palestinian records, there are nearly 12,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, hundreds of them are minors and women.

Why is it that the entire world knows the name of a captured soldier, but no one even knows about the existence of thousands of Palestinian polical prisoners and hostages in Israeli prisons?
