PRC Vows Retaliation after Israel Killed Commander in Gaza and Injured 4

06/01/2010 The Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) organization threatened Wednesday to forcefully avenge an Israeli occupation army airstrike Tuesday night, which left a senior group member killed and four others injured in Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip.

The organization's spokesman, Abu Mujahed, said that PRC would respond "to this crime" when the time is right. "We will not sit idle in light of the ongoing crimes of the Zionist occupation against our Palestinian people," he added.

The spokesman also said that "the occupation, through its ongoing attacks and incursions into the Palestinian territory, proves that it plans to escalate its crimes against the Palestinian people."

Palestinian sources said the resistance fighter martyred in the strike was identified as Jihad Sumeri, a regional commander of the PRC.

The Nasser Salaheddin Brigades, the armed wing of the PRC, issued a statement announcing the "martyrdom" of Sumeri. One of the wounded was in a critical condition, said Muawiya Hassanein, the head of Gaza emergency services.

PRC claimed responsibility for Monday's mortar attack on the occupied territories. The Israeli occupation military confirmed that it carried out the airstrike late Tuesday. Such airstrikes have been relatively rare in the year since Israel's large-scale three-week invasion of Gaza ended.

Israel has pledged to retaliate against any attacks from Gaza. Gazans fear that talk of a stalemate in the prisoner exchange negotiations with Israel, in addition to the construction of Egypt's underground wall along its border with the Strip, may indicate a possible escalation of violence.

A spokesperson for Hamas' armed wing, the Ezzeddine al-Qassam Brigades, said earlier Tuesday it was preparing for the possibility of an Israeli strike amid reports that the Islamic resistance group has been increasing its rearmament efforts as of late.
