OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- The Israeli B'Tselem human rights organization has protested Israeli war minister Ehud Barak naming Yoav Galant as the military’s new chief of staff.

The organization said in a statement Wednesday that it protests the decision to appoint Galant as chief of staff before investigating the General’s liability for the gross violations of human rights during attacks on the Gaza Strip led by Galant as Israel’s Southern Commander.

An unprecedented number of civilians in Gaza were targeted during the campaign. According to UN figures, 759 civilians, who were not involved in the fighting, and 318 minors were killed in the assaults, and 20,000 Palestinians were left homeless after 3,000 homes were demolished.

In similar developments, a national Lebanese committee to defend prisoners in Israeli jails is pushing for Arab and international mobilization to free Palestinians in Israeli prisons, at the same time appealing to the Red Cross and other international organizations to monitor prisoners’ conditions and form a health committee that supervises medical conditions in Israeli prisons.

The committee in a statement Wednesday also called on the Arab Bar and human rights organizations to file a lawsuit against the ex-Israeli soldier who posted on Facebook pictures of herself having fun while abusing cuffed and blindfolded Palestinian prisoners.
