Waving Syrian flags and pictured of President Bashar Assad and his father late President Hafez, a million-strong mass took place in Damascus on Wednesday as Qatari-led Arab delegation was heading to the capital for mediation between the Syrian government and the opposition.

Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi told AFP that meeting with Syrian officials in Damascus will begin at around 3:00 pm (1200 GMT) to inform them of the initiative, agreed upon by 21 foreign ministers.

The delegation includes the foreign ministers of Algeria Egypt, Oman and Sudan, in addition to Arabi.

In comments to pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat published on Wednesday, Arabi said he hoped "the Syrian regime would agree to this initiative, and begin with genuine reforms." "It is my prerogative as secretary general of the Arab League to meet with any member of the peaceful opposition," said Arabi, referring to a "disagreement" with the Syrian regime after he met members of the Syrian opposition.
The Syrian people flocked to Umayyad mosque in the heart of Damascus chanting, "The people want Bashar al-Assad" and refusing any foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs.

Demonstrators were participating in Syria's Family Tree Festival under the slogan "Long Live the Homeland and its Leader…Syrian People are One Family," State news agency SANA said.
They expressed appreciation for the stances of Russia and China which support Syria in face of the conspiracy hatched against it.
