Moscow: US Should Retract Signature to Geneva II if it Wants Syria Regime Change

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria ZakharovaThe United States should withdraw its signature to the Geneva communiqué if Washington does not agree that the Syrian people themselves should decide their future, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

"US colleagues should make their decision as to what they are doing, clearly present to the world the roadmap of their participation in the events," the diplomat said.

"If the US remains committed to the Geneva communiqué, then how can it mention at the UN General Assembly proposals of certain forms and concepts for shift in power?" she asked.
"The Geneva communiqué says that political future of Syria must be determined by the Syrian people themselves," she said.

"Then, probably, the US should state that it is retracting the signature to the Geneva communiqué. Then we will be able to understand what their next move will be," she added.

"If they have not recalled their signature and state their commitment to the document, then there can be no modeling of scenarios for the development of the situation and its practical implementation. Otherwise, the US is deceiving everybody," Zakharova added.

The Geneva Communiqué says that political future of Syria must be determined by the Syrian people themselves.

The communiqué was signed by the UN, the Arab League, the Foreign Ministers of China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, United States, Turkey, Iraq (as Chair of the Summit of the League of Arab States), Kuwait (as Chair of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the League of Arab States) and Qatar (as Chair of the Arab Follow-up Committee on Syria of the League of Arab States), and the European Union member states.
